Let’s jump into the top 5 sessions of the Mobile DevOps Summit 2022:

The Costs of Modularization

💜 This was a ‘most liked’ session at the Mobile DevOps Summit 2022

Modularization offers many benefits, including reducing build time, improving scalability, and easier testing; if implemented correctly. Aldo Wachyudi, Engineering Manager at Astro held a session at the 2022 Mobile DevOps Summit to speak about both the benefits and the cautionary tales associated with modularization.

In the session, he shares the cost of implementing (or not implementing) modularization and its solutions. The goal? To ensure you’re making a more conscious decision when modularizing a project, whether migrating from a single-module to a multi-module project or starting a new multi-module project.

Native Development without Double Cost

💜 This was a ‘most liked’ session at the Mobile DevOps Summit 2022

In this session, Ivo Jansch, Founder & CEO at Egeniq discusses Native vs Cross Platform development and how teams can bring practices from Cross Platform development over to Native development without doubling the cost.

While hybrid and multi platform tools are popular and have their use cases, Ivo’s talk also focusses on why a large number of apps are still developed natively. But native development for iOS and Android doesn’t mean twice the cost.

In this session Ivo shares methods to do native development efficiently using techniques such as shared architecture with the help of cross-platform frameworks and asynchronous development for projects to progress independently and concurrently. He also looks at the mobile development process as a whole to show where optimizations can be made and how to reduce redundancy and speed up development time so you can develop apps efficiently without doubling the cost.

Getting Started with Fastlane Swift

In this session that followed our keynote speaker, CEO & Co-Founder here at Bitrise, Barnabas Birmacher, Tim Oliver, iOS Engineer at Instagram, takes us through Fastlane Swift: The open source platform that “lets you perform automated tasks for the most common things you need to do to ship an iOS and Mac OS app”.

Tim talks about how Fastlane Swift streamlines the development process by automating commonly repetitive tasks. By using a configuration file, it specifies the workflows to automatically generate screenshots of your app, sign the binary prior to uploading, and even handle the upload to the App Store itself.

Fastlane makes it incredibly easy to automate nearly every task involving testing and publishing apps to both  Apple and Android platforms. However the fact that it requires knowledge of Ruby makes it quite a daunting challenge for most Apple platform developers. Watch Tim’s session as he walks you through how to use Fastlane Swift, how to integrate it with an existing project, and how to use existing CI for more efficient app building.

How to Improve your Mobile Project in 1 Day – A Guide for everyone

💜 This was a ‘most liked’ session at the Mobile DevOps Summit 2022

Have you ever spent long minutes or hours configuring a project, going from person to person to find some answers?

Have you ever had a problem understanding the purpose of changes with an empty or laconic Pull Request (PR)?

Have you ever spent too much time checking the style instead of the logic in the PR description?

Have you ever corrected tests after someone forgot to check if they work before merging?

Do you think your project is carried out at the highest level, and you need someone to confirm it for you (e.g. a speaker at a conference)?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, then this talk is for you!

In this session, Dawid tells a story about one messy project and how his team improved it using several tools (to give him more time to write super functionalities and watch YouTube). During this interactive session, Dawid considers whether the README file is needed for anything or not. Then, he tells you how to make your PR more meaningful to your team and how automation can be your ally in tedious processes like PR validation or code writing with the slightest possible effort. Ultimately, he’s showing you how to make your project resilient to unexpected code merges.

⚡️Added bonus: He also prepared a universal list of tools for you (README file, PR template, Danger, Linter and more), which acts as an ideal introduction to improving the work in your project and can be used as a checklist that will allow you to assess whether your project is carried out on the highest level.

How KPIs can drive your mobile CI transformation project

This session was a most-watched session at the 2022 Mobile DevOps Summit due to Jane McKay (Senior Software Engineering Manager at Dyson)  talking in detail about how she managed the MyDyson app, a multi-product IoT app, with KPIs. Jane goes into detail to explain how a working group in Dyson’s mobile app team set KPIs for their CI and how these KPIs drove and are still driving great improvements.

The MyDyson app is a one-stop shop for all Dyson related products and Jane talks about competing in an industry that has one-app per product and how they manage this monster app whilst keeping it efficient. Their mission: ‘one app to control everything’.

They have a staggering 3.18m iOS users, 1.25m Android users, their app is available in 42 different markets, is translated into 39 different languages and they have 7 scrum teams across 3 global locations with 60 Engineers. They release every 4 weeks (during the video Jane talks about why they chose that cadence due to their need to connect to physical products) and create a phenomenal >750,000 test instances a day. Their app is big!

In this session, Jane talks through how they migrated to Bitrise from an in-house CI solution. Her team needed to transform their CI and opmitize the performance of their large MyDyson app so this 20 minute video takes you through exactly how they did this using KPIs.
